The Itawamba County Tax Assessor

The Itawamba County Tax Assessor’s Office is made up of the following departments: Real Property Appraisal, Personal Property (Business), Homestead, 911 Addressing, and Mapping.

These departments work together to appraise real and personal property within Itawamba County, administer homestead applications, and generate county tax maps. All property values and exemptions are administered as of an effective lien date of January 1 each year.

Tax Assessor Duties and Responsibilities

The Tax Assessor is required to annually locate, class, and assess all taxable property within the county and is responsible for setting fair, uniform, and accurate values for each parcel of real and personal property. The Tax Assessor is also charged by the board of supervisors to maintain current ownership maps of the county. In addition to these appraisal duties, we work daily with local and national agencies to promote the economic well-being of the county and its citizens. My staff is constantly looking for ways to improve the way we do our job. We want to make it easier for property owners to understand and participate in the determination of their property values as we want to provide the fairest, most accurate assessments possible. We strive daily to be fair and equitable while keeping the office compliant and within the regulations of the Department of Revenue.

Homestead Exemption

Homestead exemption may be filed from January 1 to April 1. The following documents are needed when filing for homestead exemption:

  • All deeds to your property (it has to be the recorded instrument – warranty deeds or quit-claims – NOT the deed of trust).
  • Car tag numbers for all vehicles owned by you or in your possession.
  • Social Security numbers for yourself, spouse, and any joint owners.
  • Birth dates for yourself, spouse, and any joint owners.
  • Purchase price of home.
  • Amount of downpayment or equity.
  • Purchase price of land, if you purchased it separately from the home.
  • If you built your home yourself, we need to know the cost to build it.

Additional Homestead Exemption Benefits

When a homestead applicant reaches the age of 65 years old or is classified as 100% disabled, the individual is able to apply for additional homestead exemption benefits. Either the age of 65 or the 100% disability status must be established on January 1 of the year they apply for the additional benefit. Application for this additional benefit must be made in person at the tax assessors office. If eligible, the additional benefit will be applied to the amount of taxes due at the end of the year.
