Tax Collector

Kathy Bean, Tax Collector

The Itawamba County Tax Collector

The Tax Collector is responsible for the collection of taxes on real property, personal property, manufactured homes, automobiles, motorcycles, motor homes, trailers, and airplanes.

Your solid waste bill must be up to date (or current) before a motor vehicle (car tag) renewal card can be purchased. Solid waste payments are due on the 20th of the month.

Real and Personal Property tax cards are mailed in December. Mobile home tax cards are mailed in January. After February 1st following the tax year for which payment is collected, payments are subject to 0.5% per month interest.

Use tax is collected on items brought to the State of Mississippi by residents for first use, storage, or consumption. Sales Tax is collected on casual sales of motor vehicles between individuals.

The Tax Collector must advertise and hold a tax sale once a year on the last Monday in August for any unpaid taxes on real estate or any special assessments. Accurate records must be kept at all times, since this office is involved in the collection of taxes that help fund a variety of government services.

Itawamba County Tax Sales

As required by Mississippi Code Sections 27-41-49 to 27-41-89, the Tax Collectors of the 82 counties and those municipalities that collect their own taxes must “sell” all land on which the taxes are not paid on either the first Monday in April or the last Monday in August. Itawamba County, like most counties, holds its tax sale on the last Monday in August at 8:30 a.m. each year.

The date of the Tax Sale in Itawamba County is always the last Monday in August, beginning promptly at 8:30 a.m. The Tax Sale usually takes between 3 and 5 days to complete.

The Tax Sale is conducted online at www.govease.com.

Registration for the online Tax Sale starts August 1. You may contact our office for instructions on how to register for the Tax Sale and how to submit your payment or register online at www.govease.com.

The beginning amount is always the amount of the taxes and penalty.

Properties with unpaid taxes are advertised in Itawamba County Times one day a week for two consecutive weeks after the fifth day of August.

No lists of property to be sold will be provided by this office. There will be a list available on the Govease website.

Overbids are discouraged, because you do not receive interest on the overbid and the purchaser at Tax Sale does not get the overbid back when the tax is redeemed! So, a purchaser at Tax Sale could easily lose money if they overbid and the property was redeemed fairly soon after the sale.

Upon redemption, tax sale purchasers are returned the base amount of the taxes and penalty (excluding overbid) plus 1.5% interest.

During the redemption period registered letters are sent to the property owners and any recorded lien holders by the Chancery Clerk.

At the end of the two-year redemption period, the Tax Sale Purchaser can apply to the Chancery Clerk for a Tax Deed.

All redemptions and pay-backs to tax sale purchasers are handled by the Chancery Clerk. They may be contacted at 662-862-3421.

If a parcel is not purchased by a bidder at the tax sale, it is “struck off to the state” or “sold to the state”. This rarely happens anymore because there are always enough buyers at the tax sale to buy all the properties offered. A list of lands that have been certified to the state can be found on the Secretary of State’s website at www.sos.ms.gov.
